Overall, I find myself largely in agreement with the text. However, it places significant emphasis on pharmacology and also addresses the role of vaccines in veterinary medicine.
While I recognize that not all holistic veterinarians oppose vaccinations, it is crucial to understand that holistic practitioners typically prioritize overall wellness and health optimization for their patients. They emphasize species-appropriate nutrition, acupuncture, herbal therapy, and osteopathy, often valuing these diverse methods over routine vaccinations and conventional pharmaceuticals. Their primary goal is to naturally enhance the immune system and promote long-term health in pets. In this book, I noted a strong focus on Western medical protocols, which may not resonate with the holistic perspective embraced by many practitioners.
Both holistic and conventional veterinarians share a foundational medical education; however, their approaches to pet health diverge significantly in philosophy and practice. Conventional veterinarians tend to concentrate on diagnosing and treating specific symptoms through surgical and pharmaceutical interventions, resulting in a more reactive style of care that addresses issues as they arise. In contrast, holistic veterinarians adopt a comprehensive and integrative approach, treating the "whole pet" by considering factors such as diet, lifestyle, and stress to uncover the root causes of illness. They prefer natural therapies that support the body’s innate healing processes.
I found the textbook to be highly informative and educational, although it required a considerable amount of time to read and fully absorb the information presented. I agree with nearly all of its content, which is well-supported by factual information and evidence-based practices, making it difficult to dispute most of the assertions made throughout the text. My only point of contention lies in the strong emphasis on pharmacology; I believe that a more balanced and nuanced perspective, incorporating various treatment modalities, would greatly enhance the discussion.
